Interestingly enough, our educators originally asked us to film interviews with visitors in the gallery, but we knew the editing, encoding and uploading was going to be too much of a workload for us to handle. That’s when we started to experiment with this, sort of as a means to do the same kind of thing, but without the overhead. I have to say, compared to the technical challenges of shooting/editing/encoding/uploading, moderation was a real breeze (and the nice thing is, anyone on staff can moderate to share the workload). Doing it this way allowed this to be a permanent fixture in the gallery and saved us tons of time overall.

We’ve been working with a video booth, post-processing clips, then uploading to Youtube days after the actual event — SO cumbersome. Good to know it can be this simple!

That’s a pretty funny video, right? I wouldn’t box them only because I think these had a real accessible feel to them – people seemed to be attracted to them because they were familiar. The hardware actually held up really, really well. The books are white, so you have to work to keep them clean (but we do this anyway). These were the same laptops we used for Click!, so they’ve been in the galleries pretty consistently without too many issues.

Given that they survived–if you have more time next time, will you put them in a protective box? Or do you think the simplicity & effort-savings is worth the risk?
