Hey – very cool! Well done. One thought for additional content that you might think of is AR a la Yelp Monicle, AcrossAir are doing. Check out what Zugara from LA has been doing in this space. While distracting and a bit problematic for every item, imagine using QR for rooms. Amazing what can be delivered using them.

Kudos on the success. Very cool.

Dan

At least, I think we are. (I am not the network guy).

I’ll be really curious how you come out with that. The problem that we have is that Cisco access points will do almost anything to keep your connection once you are associated. The signal has to get really, really low before it will initiate a re-association with a stronger AP. With 70, count ’em, 70 access points in the building…as people move from one room to another, often they are still connected to the previous room’s access point. There are solutions for this, Cisco makes a product that allows you to better manage a mesh, but they are wicked expensive.

In terms of third party solutions – we really want to avoid that for a variety of reasons. The one problem with writing posts like this is all the calls I get from vendors trying to sell us something as a result! Argh :)

We have WiFi in just about all our galleries (and we’re in the process of greatly expanding). One of the ideas I’ve been kicking around is using SNMP to talk to our access point controller and see which mac address is on which AP, and the correlating that with the IP the visitor has, and we might be able to get a guess on where they are, given that 1 gallery = 1 AP. That’s the theory, anyway.

There is some company who’s name escapes me that claims to have software that does wifi triangulation.. That is, you tell software where your APs are, and what your physical layout, and it will triangulate indoors based on the signal strengths from the APs that can see a wifi device.
