Last month, our Adult Programs team came to me asking how we could help create a visitor-curated Target First Saturday. It was one of those situations where the web team didn’t have a ton of time, but the idea of it sounded so exciting that we wanted to find a way to make it happen. In the end, Paul Beaudoin (our ever-fabulous programmer who I’ve mentioned before), tricked out WordPress (ver 2.9) to create a web presence for this. He used Embed.ly to auto-embed nominations and Janrain to enable authentication from external social networking sites.
During the month of July, you can go to the web and nominate your favorite bands, DJs, films and books. Then, in August, we’ll do a round of online voting to determine the outcome. The AP staff have some things they want you to think about when sending nominations and they will be on hand throughout the process to discuss proposals as we go along. One of the things I really liked about this project was the opportunity for visitors creating nominations to get to know the staff working behind the scenes who make Target First Saturday a reality every month and vice versa.
So, help us out—go nominate something and you might just see it show up at the October Target First Saturday!
Shelley Bernstein is the former Vice Director of Digital Engagement & Technology at the Brooklyn Museum where she spearheaded digital projects with public participation at their center. In the most recent example—ASK Brooklyn Museum—visitors ask questions using their mobile devices and experts answer in real time. She organized three award-winning projects—Click! A Crowd-Curated Exhibition, Split Second: Indian Paintings, GO: a community-curated open studio project—which enabled the public to participate in the exhibition process.
Shelley was named one of the 40 Under 40 in Crain's New York Business and her work on the Museum's digital strategy has been featured in the New York Times.
In 2016, Shelley joined the staff at the Barnes Foundation as the Deputy Director of Digital Initiatives and Chief Experience Officer.
