I am an archaeological conservator that visited Egypt with my 10 year old daughter in 2007. We were fortunate to see papyrus paper being made as a demonstration in a shop that sold modern paintings on papyrus.

One thing they pointed out is that when you cut the cross section of the plant you will see a triangular shape of the inner fibers. This triangle was sacred to them as it reminded them of the pyramid shapes seen naturally in land formations in the Abu Simbel region of Egypt and they attributed the pyramid and triangle to Ra. One of your photos shows the triangle in your cross section of the plant.

Terry Marsh is a local friend and recommended I look up your report. I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade art this year and I have been exploring different fibers to have my students make their own paper. Your summary was great and I will have them look up your write-up of Making Papyrus in the Conservation Lab.

Thank you!!

Molly
